Welcome to the 31st edition of From V to You, a weekly letter of inspiration, tips, tricks, and behind-the-scenes of how I’m building a business around my personal brand so you can too. If you’ve missed the previous letters, you can always read them here.
Writing to you a bit late this Sunday, but it’s because I’ve been blissfully disconnected from the world for over a week. I went on a trip where I had my phone on airplane mode all week, didn’t wear an ounce of makeup, and doing my hair meant very messy buns. It was glorious!!
Considering how addicted we are to our phones, Wifi, and outward appearances, forcing yourself to be detached from all of it isn’t just a good idea – it’s a necessity. Especially if you’re a personal brand that has to be “on” all the time.
Did you know that twice a year, Bill Gates spends an entire week completely secluded from civilization, alone with his own thoughts, in a secret two-story cabin in the Pacific Northwest??
He calls them “Think Weeks.”
As the mother of a 3-year-old and newly turned 6 years old, I don’t have the luxury of an entire week of undistracted thinking, but I have been fighting to find time to just be on my own. To think, to read, to study, to journal, to visualize the kind of person I want to become, the kind of life I want to build, and the you who I want to serve.
And a good portion of my “Think Time” is spent self-learning. Educating myself by studying the work of DOERs. Learning in hours and days what took others decades to master.
I’m a HUGE advocate for self-education.
And, though true, it makes me sad to admit that I’ve learned more from books, podcasts, conferences, online courses, and masterminds than my four collegiate years at a formal institution. At a fraction of the cost + time…☹️
Which as a reminder, I cannot wait for Tony Robbins + Dean Graziosi’s free training this Thursday (you’re invited too!), but in the meantime, I’d like to share my Top 5 books that I’ve recently completed that have changed my thinking and work in the BEST ways:
- The Millionaire Messenger: Make a Difference and a Fortune Sharing Your Advice by Brendon Burchard
- Think. Do. Say.: How to seize attention and build trust in a busy, busy world by Ron Tite
- Building a StoryBrand: Clarify Your Message So Customers Will Listen by Donald Miller
- Never Split the Difference: Negotiating as if Your Life Depended on It by Chris Voss
- Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die by Chip + Dan Heath
If you ever feel stuck or in a rut, pick up a book and a highlighter. You can’t help getting inspired by the words others were inspired to write.
Until next time ❤️️
See you Thursday night!
