This email is less conceptual and way more practical. I’m going to lay it ALL out when it comes to what you should and shouldn’t be outsourcing when in the pursuit of building your own brand. Oh and I’m going to share with you what I actually pay each month! Are you…

What I Outsource + How Much

  1. Market Research/Sales/Press – I use a Virtual Assistant (love you S!) who is my lifeline. I found S and others through Upwork and have been very happy with the relationships I’ve built through the platform. S helps me find speaking opportunities that we can pitch to, and she also screens any press opportunities through HARO for me. Because of foreign exchange rates, I’ve been pretty fortunate to find incredible talent for less $10/hr.
  2. Social Media Posting + Commenting – I hired an amazing IG manager that helps me keep up with the demands of the GRAM. Organizing pictures I take or taken of me, researching hashtags, creating shareable quotes, laying everything out in the feed, editing the images, so they have the same look, etc. Phew. I pay between $200-500/month for anywhere between 2-7 posts a week.
  3. Facebook Ads – I think I’m pretty able and deadly when it comes to managing my own Facebook ad efforts, but there is zero substitutes for an Ads wizard who does this all day long and masters every corner of the platform. J is my swiss army knife. He can slice, dice, saw every idea or test I think of when it comes to managing our ad efforts to attract more MyModernBrand family members. I pay about 20% of whatever I spend in Facebook/Google as my management fee, and it’s worth every single freaking penny. Plus I don’t have to lose my mind over tracking codes and custom lists to include or exclude.
  4. Web Design + Development – Coding a website and designing the perfect landing page is not my strong suit. Probably the one thing that I have the least amount of patience for. I wish I were more creative, but I’m definitely more left-brained. Thank goodness for N + F. They bring my visions to LIFE. Every website I have, every landing page I’ve built, every download you might have gotten from me, and every PowerPoint presentation you’ve seen me use on stage. They are my digital stylists! I probably spend $500-1000 a month depending on my needs that month. (Also in a pinch I have used 99Designs and was pleasantly surprised by the talent on there.)
  5. Extras Here + There – Team members I don’t use on the regular but are critical to me and my success. My business lawyer B, my copywriter S, my Quickbooks keeping husband, countless friends who look over my work to give me a 2nd opinion, my mentors who push me to be better than what I thought was already my best, etc.


What I Outsource + How Much

Because branding just one person still takes an army of people and an immense amount of coordination.

No one gets to where they aspire to go alone. Period.

It also takes financial capital too. I’ve been scrappy and diligent with budgeting but add up all those line items, and it’s still over a thousand dollars or more a month.

And I’m sure that if pushed come to shove, I could do everything above on my own but I also know three things:

  1. It would be inferior to those who are truly gifted in their disciplines
  2. It would come at the sacrifice of my family life
  3. I would have NO time for ideation, creativity, and practice

Speakers, book authors, coaches, consultants, thought leaders, corporate leaders, etc. HAVE to have time to actually THINK and challenge the status quo to add more value to the world and you the person they’re trying to serve. If in your personal branding pursuits, you find yourself with zero time to actually think about how you want to help someone succeed…you’re going to get burned out, your efforts will fall flat, and your impact will be muffled. I know because I’ve been there.


When to Outsource

The rule of thumb for me when deciding to outsource is if I lack either of the following:

  1. Lack of time
  2. Lack of knowledge

It’s an opportunity cost game. Even if I have the knowledge to do something, I can make more money doing the thing no one else can do for me 🙂

Quick Side Note

Keep in mind the time allotment when managing all your outsourced help vs. working with a marketing agency that takes care of all of it for you. Finding my army has taken me YEARS, and I’m in the marketing world every day. Agencies bear the brunt of that work in finding and keeping their amazing talent, so you don’t have to.
